3 Minute Timer

← All preset timers

The three-minute round is the unit professional boxing is built on, and it outlives the sport in gym clocks, bag work and round-based conditioning. Away from the ring the number belongs mostly to tea and eggs. Black tea is usually given three to five minutes, and three is the brisk end of that range rather than the stewed one. A soft-boiled egg at three minutes is the runny extreme, the point where thirty seconds either way decides whether the yolk pours or holds its shape.

Ends with an audible alarm — keep this tab's sound unmuted. A running countdown keeps counting in a background tab and picks itself back up if you reload.

Why 3 minutes

A spoken piece often gets the same ceiling: a competition slot, a lightning talk, a rehearsal target, all short enough to run again immediately. In the kitchen, treat the alarm as a cue rather than a finish line. Food carries on cooking once it leaves the heat, so an egg lifted at three minutes keeps setting inside its shell while you are peeling it.

What people set it for

  • A boxing or bag-work round
  • Steeping black tea briefly
  • A very runny soft-boiled egg
  • Resting meat off the heat
  • A three-minute talk or pitch

FAQ

Why are boxing rounds three minutes?
It is the long-standing professional convention, three minutes of work against one minute of rest, and gyms inherited it for bag and pad work. It is not universal: amateur bouts and most professional bouts between women use two-minute rounds. As a conditioning interval, three minutes is simply long enough that pacing becomes part of the exercise.
Is three minutes enough for black tea?
It is the short end of the usual three to five minute range and gives a lighter, less tannic cup. Larger pots and stronger leaves want longer, while a single bag in a mug at three minutes is already assertive. Tea keeps extracting until the leaves come out, so lift them at the tone rather than after the first sip.
Does the alarm need a download or a connection?
No. The tone is generated live in the browser from oscillators, so there is no sound file to fetch and nothing to install. Once the page has loaded it also runs offline, which matters in a gym basement or a kitchen with poor signal. Losing reception mid-round has no effect on the countdown.
